What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, the protocol which provides data encryption. SSL provides secure, encrypted communication channels between a web server and a web browser. This turns a website’s URL from regular HTTP:// to HTTPS://, that ‘S’ stands for ‘secured’. There are many SSL Certifying Authorities (CA) who issue an SSL Certificate to certify that a connection between a web server and a web browser is secured. Certifying Authority provides an encrypted code to be installed on a website owners web server. It is known as a private key. When visited such secured websites, Internet Browsers show a security lock icon near address bar and shows the URL as https://. Browsers use public key issued by Certifying Authority to decrypt the data and show on the website visitor’s web page.
